Beisbolista estadounidense. En 1933 comenzó su carrera profesional como primera base de los Detroit Tigers. Contribuyó en mucho a que los Tigers ganaran dos veces la Serie Mundial, en 1935 y 1940, y en ambas ocasiones fue designado el Jugador Más Valioso del año. En 1938 logró 58 home runs, apenas dos menos que el récord de Babe Ruth, vigente por entonces. Con frecuencia debió afrontar prejuicios en el campo de juego, pero su negativa a jugar en los feriados judíos le valió respeto y admiración. En la segunda guerra mundial prestó servicio en el ejército, durante cuatro años y después volvió a los Tigers; transferido a los Pittsburgh Pirates en 1947, se retiró en 1948. Más tarde fue uno de los propietarios y gerente general de los Cleveland Indians hasta 1957, y gerente de los Chicago White Sox de 1959 a 1963. Fue el primer jugador judío que llegó a ser estrella en las grandes ligas. En 1956 ingresó al Salón de la Fama del Béisbol.
